MLB is 20 games away from the playoffs. So far, the Yankees continue to dominate opposition. But never count other teams out. Here is a preview of 3 series’ featuring the Giants, Dodgers, Rays, Orioles, Red Sox and Yankees.
Los Angeles Dodgers (85-58) against the San Francisco Giants (76-66)
San Francisco has been struggling lately; they are only 4-6 in their last 10 games and are currently on a 4-game losing streak. Meanwhile the Mets are also 4-6 in their last 10 games. The Dodgers won the first two games of the series.
The third game of their series is scheduled on September 13 at San Francisco.
The Giants will deploy newly-acquired Brad Penny (9-8, 5.15 ERA) to the mound against the Dodgers. Penny won his last two starts for the Giants. He led San Francisco to a 4-0 win against the Phillies and allowed only three hits in a 9-4 win over the Padres.
Los Angeles Dodgers Chad Billingsley (12-9, 3.93 ERA) gets the start against the Giants. Billingsley is currently on a three game losing streak. He is 0-3 in his last four starts. Against the Giants, Billingsley is 1-1 with a 2.53 ERA this season.
I expect the Dodgers to complete the series sweep with a win over the Giants.
Tampa Bay Rays (72-69) against the Boston Red Sox (82-58)
The first game of the three game series was postponed and continued on the following day where the Red Sox beat the Rays 9-1. The second game will be on September 13 at Boston.
The Tampa Bay Rays are on a nasty nine-game losing streak. They have won only once in their past ten games. Boston is riding a three-game winning streak and is 6-4 in their last ten games.
Clay Buchholz (5-3, 3.92 ERA, 44 K’s) will start for the Red Sox in the second game. Buchholz has won his last three starts and hopes to pick up his fourth consecutive win.
The Rays will call on Matt Garza (7-9, 3.85 ERA) to lead them on the mound. Garza has not won a game in his last eight starts. He is winless since July 24. However, opposing batters are only .231 against Garza.
Boston should win two of three games in their series against the Rays.
Baltimore Orioles (58-83) against the New York Yankees (91-52)
The Orioles have been able to hold their own against the Yankees. Baltimore won the first two games of their three-game series against the Yankees.
The Yankees are 6-4 in their last ten games while the Orioles sport a 4-6 record in their last ten. Jeremy Guthrie (10-13, 4.96 ERA) will start for the Orioles. Guthrie is 3-1 in his last four starts featuring an impressive 1.33 ERA.
Guthrie will be going up against CC Sabathia (16-7, 3.40). Sabathia has led the Yankees to victory in his last eight starts.
Expect the Yankees to win the final game of the series.
