The English Premier League kicked off last August 15. Manchester United will try and defend its crown without superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. Based on the history of the league, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal are the most successful clubs.

Manchester United and Liverpool each own 18 EPL crowns while Arsenal is not far behind with 18. The big question is if Manchester United can win one without Ronaldo. The answer to that question is most definitely. Man U dominated the English Premier League long before Ronaldo joined the team. But Ronaldo’s departure will give rivals Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal confidence to beat the defending champs.

Arsenal opened up against Everton last August 15 and it was a massacre. Arsenal exploded to score 6 goals against Everton’s one. It’s as if Arsenal is sending a message to the whole league. Led by then Arsenal striker Thierry Henry, the team last won the title in the 2004 season at the expense of Chelsea. But its different now, French striker Thierry Henry is no longer with Arsenal. Against Everton, Arsenal displayed sharp and accurate passing. Who needs Henry when Arsenal has midfielder Cesc Fabregas. Fabregas scored two goals in destroying Everton. In Everton’s defense, Everton is not an elite Premier team. Everton last won the title in 1986; that’s about 23 years ago.

Huge spending by Chelsea has bolted them to the elite and it resulted into two straight FA Premier Titles in 2005 and 2006. Chelsea shut out Manchester United in the title game in 2006. Chelsea opened up the 2009 season with a strong showing against Hull City. Chelsea striker Didier Drogba scored two goals against Hull City’s one. Hull City was leading the game until Drogba struck in the 36th minute with a free kick. Drogba finished the job in the 90th minute.

Chelsea’s defense was not up to par with its usual standards and Hull City had two attempts at the Chelsea goal. Hull City captain George Boateng and Dean Marney failed to capitalize on a relaxed Chelsea’s defense.

Defending champs Manchester United will open up the season against Birmingham City. United may not have Ronaldo but they did acquire Michael Owen from Newcastle United. It’ll be interesting to see how Manchester United will play without the ball-dominating dribbling of Cristiano Ronaldo. Expect more movement and crisp passes.

The English Premier League is underway and Manchester United is seeking its fourth straight crown. Chelsea and Arsenal have looked sharp in their opening games but do they have what it takes to overthrow the United powerhouse?
