The US Open is one of the four Grand Slam events in tennis. The US Open is held at the Flushing Meadows, New York, USA. After four rounds of Women’s tennis, favorites like Dinara Safina, Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic,  Elena Dementieva and Jelena Jankovic have been ousted.

It is fairly obvious that the favorite to win this year’s US Open is the world number two Serena Williams. She won in 1999, 2002 and 2008. During her first match at this year’s US Open tournament, she dominated Alexa Glatch. She won in straight sets, 6-4 , 6-1. Williams used her powerful baseline game and didn’t make any careless errors. Serena has yet to face anyone notable but with her current dominant play it is hardly imaginable that anyone can beat her. In the fourth round, Serena easily dismissed Daniela Hantuchova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.

Serena’s’ older sister Venus also has a rackets chance to win this year. It is not rocket science that the Williams sisters always have a chance at winning a Grand Slam event. Don’t be surprised to see an all-Williams Wimbledon finals again because Venus has won the US Open title twice, in 2000 and 2001. Venus’ lanky frame and athleticism make it easy for her to cover the court and difficult for opponents to find angles on the court. As I write this article Venus is having a hard time against the returning Kim Clijsters.

The world ranked number one Dinara Safina was also a huge favorite to win this year but she was ousted in the sixth day of the tournament by Czech teenager Petra Kvitova. Dinara lost 6–4, 2–6, 7–6(5). Dinara was shaky from the start of the tournament. She survived early scares from Kristina Barrois and Olivia Rogowska.

Svetlana Kuznetsova is a two time Grand Slam event winner. She is long and athletic. Kuznetsova will be facing Caroline Wozniaki in the fourth round. She ousted Shahar Peer, 7-5, 6-1

Chinese Li Na makes her way into the fifth round. She defeated world ranked 26th Francesca Schiavone, 6-2, 6-3.

Former world number one Ana Ivanovic was shown an early exit again. Ivanovic needs to go back to the drawing board if she wants to retain her top rank.

The US Open is not wide open. Serena Williams is poised to win back-to-back US Open’s and her fourth overall Open title.
