Does the United States Men’s National Team have another miracle up their sleeves? Team USA stunningly find themselves in the Confederations Cup semi-finals by taking advantage of an off-day for the Egypt team, proceeding to embarrass them 3 goals to nil.

Now, Team USA faces a gigantic roadblock in the form of reigning European Champions Spain. The last time these two teams met was last year during a friendly. Surprisingly, the Spanish team ONLY won by a goal. But that was a friendly match. The stakes are much higher in the Confederations Cup.

Spain has won 15 straight international matches and the United States look like victim number 16. The United States have no right being in the semi-finals. But they have nothing to lose and will play for broke against the Spanish powerhouse. If they expect to win, they should employ a defensive game plan and pull-back defenders to avoid being beaten with crosses and crisp passes. Good defense may also lead to offensive counter attacks against Spain.

USA’s defenders have been holding up effectively. Jonathan Bornstein and Jonathan Spector of the United States will have their hands full against Fernando Torres and David Villa. Good luck with that because Spanish stud Fernando Torres only needed 17 minutes to rack up a hat trick against New Zealand.

Spanish crosses are on point and very accurate; Team USA will have to hold on for dear life defending them. Against an average (I’m trying to be nice here) United States’ defense, Torres and Villa will run wild and not let up their attack.

Spanish defenders Gerald Pique and Carlos Puyol have not given up a goal in the tournament. Their impenetrable defense will surely lock-in on Langdon Donovan.

Let us give Team USA the benefit of a doubt. Spain has not been tested in the tournament. So far, they have only faced Iraq, New Zealand and South Africa. Not exactly powerhouse teams.

USA coach Bob Bradley should consider adding in another offensive threat to compliment Langdon Donovan. He should consider inserting youngster Freddie Adu into the line-up. During their friendly match last year, Freddie Adu had a noticeable impact on the game; he brought quickness, creativity and much-needed edge to Team USA.

Spain’s offense will be triggered by midfielders Fabregas, Alonso and Xavi. They will create opportunities for Torres and Villa to finish at the net.

To have a chance, USA midfielders Michael Bradley and Ricardo Clark will have to play very physical. Team USA has to throw Spain off rhythm by frustrating them into bad passes.

USA has nothing to lose and has the opportunity to pull of the granddaddy of all upsets. Expect them to leave everything out on the field. They don’t have any business being in the semis but it wouldn’t hurt if they asked for another miracle.

Spain has not taken any opponent lightly in this tournament and don’t expect them to stop now. Barring an off-day by Spain and major injuries to their players, the Spanish Armada will run over the US and leave them as road kill.

Plus, a finals featuring Spain and Brazil would leave fans satisfied ’til next year’s World Cup.
