The NBA season is a couple of months away but it’s been a very busy offseason. Not lost in the busy offseason were questionable signings and returning to old form of several superstars. Since, we’ve discussed recent trades and moves of previous NBA teams, this article will discuss the outlook of the Suns, Grizzlies and Sixers.
Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns traded away Shaq to the Cavs. The Big Fella never really fitted with the Suns run-and-gun offense. Plus, Amar’e Stoudemire found that having Shaq clogged the lane. With Shaq gone, the Suns are back to their brand of exciting basketball. Exciting but not effective in the playoffs. With Stoudemire back to full strength, Nash will undoubtedly feed him with a lot of gimmes on the break. The lane will be much more open for Stoudemire’s vicious dunks because the skinny, lanky Channing Frye will fill in for center now.
Phoenix is not considered the powerhouse team they were 3 years ago.
Memphis Grizzlies
The Memphis Grizzlies did the questionable move of signing Allen Iverson. Exactly, how does Iverson fit with the Grizzlies? He is not the right person to mentor the Grizzlies young core of OJ Mayo, Marc Gasol, Rudy Gay and Hasheem Thabeet. Iverson presence will poison the Grizzlies young core. He doesn’t make them any better. To add insult to injury, Memphis also added another selfish ball dominating player in Zach Randolph.
Zach Randolph will eat up the minutes Thabeet was going to use to gain experience and adjust to the physical NBA game. With Randolph in the mix, Thabeet’s development is going to take a back seat to selfish play.
It was purely obvious that Iverson was added for business purposes but if he can put his ego behind him and come off the bench, he will be much more effective. It will also repair the damage his image has taken last season. Wait, what image?
Philadelphia Sixers
The Philadelphia Sixers are gonna play next season like a chicken that lost its head. Andre Miller signed with the Blazers and the Sixers now lack a leader and distributer. Sure, Louis Williams is a gifted player but he isn’t a point guard, he is more of a combo guard.
Injuries bothered Elton Brand last season but he returns healthy. I doubt that he can return to All-Star form. He was healthy last season but he still stunk up the joint. Also, Brand doesn’t fit with the high-tempo offense that Philadelphia is identified with. Philadelphia is more effective in the open court compared to half-court sets.
