Tiger Woods is currently playing great at the Buick Open. He is in the lead after three rounds. Tiger definitely used his poor showing at the British Open as motivation to improve his golf game yet again.
If Tiger Woods does win the Buick Open, he will be the favorite to win his fifth PGA Championship. But the crowd favorite will definitely be Phil Mickelson. Mickelson makes his return to the course after taking an indefinite leave to be by his wife’s side.
The PGA Championship will be held on August 10 at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. The PGA Championship hasn’t been held at the Hazeltine National Golf Club since 2002 when Rich Beem won the tournament.
Padraig Harrington of Ireland is the defending champion of the PGA Championship. He won last year’s PGA Championship by 2 strokes over Sergio Garcia. Padraig Harrington should be one of the favorites to win this year’s PGA Championship.
Tiger Woods missed last year’s PGA Championship to rehabilitate his knee. It is Woods’ last chance to finish the season strong. If there is one thing everyone knows; never count Tiger Woods out of contention. Woods technically did not have the chance to defend the PGA Championship last year.
When Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington did play on the same course in 2006, Harrington didn’t even make the cut.
Phil Mickelson will aim to win his second PGA Championship. He won the title in 2005 by 2 strokes, just for comparison, Tiger Woods finished fourth in the same year. Lefty will be cheered for every fairway hit and birdie because the nation has been inspired by his family’s fight against cancer.
Rich Beem won the PGA Championship at the Hazeltine National Golf Club when the tournament was held there in 2002. He has the experience and is most capable of making the correct reads on the green. Beem will definitely have the confidence coming into this tournament.
Sergio Garcia continues to disappoint. He has not won a single major tournament and can’t seem to get over the hump. Garcia finished second place in last year’s PGA Championship. As a golf fan, I hope he wins that elusive first major.
All eyes will be on Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship. But it would be foolish to count out defending champion Pedraig Harrington and the enigmatic Sergio Garcia.
Keep your eyes glued to the PGA Championship because you never know if a Cinderella story is about to unfold. Just ask Stewart Cink.

Tiger will win the Buick, but not the PGA. When it comes to Majors, Tiger has won his last one. Tiger puts too much pressure on himself to win the Majors and secure his place in History. He now plays with a fear of losing instead of with the absolute determination of winning. This is why he missed the cut at the British Open. His mind can be his best friend but also his worst enemy. Unfortunately for Tiger, at the Majors, it is becoming his worst enemy. Tiger knows his time is now, and with every missed opportunity the pressure mounts. The 2008 U.S. Open victory cost him too much. His hiatus from golf gave him too much time to think. He’s trying to make up for lost time and by the end of the first round of Majors he is done. Unless Tiger can gain some perspective, fear will turn to panic and what happened at the British Open will repeat itself more often.

Nice take on Tiger Dave. I agree with your point that Tiger is now more fearful of losing rather than willing himself to win. But I don’t think Tiger is not gonna win another Major. Tiger is struggling but like all the great athletes, he will find a way to win. Remember Jordan during his first comeback? The Bulls lost in the Eastern Conference Finals that year but the following year he picked up his fourth championship. Point is all the great ones find a way to win. Tiger may not win a Major this year or next but he is bound to win a couple more before he retires. Remember Jack Nicklaus won his last Major at age 46 and Tiger is only 33. If Tiger is as great as the media perceives him to be, he will equal or surpass Nicklaus’ record of 18 Majors.
