UFC 100, to be shown later, is expected to draw up to 1.3 million pay per views. It is only fitting that the biggest show of the sport will have the heavyweight championship on the line for the main event. Frank Mir (the interim champion), will face Brock Lesnar (the current champion) to determine who will be the undisputed heavyweight champion of UFC.

lesnar-mirThe two could not have been anymore different. Frank Mir (12-3), started out early with his mixed martial arts career. He is a master technician who can beat his opponents in a number of ways. Brock Lesnar’s (3-1) claim to fame was his stint in the World Wrestling Entertainment, who is seeking legitimacy by entering the world of MMA. The brash hulk does not have the skills of a top-caliber fighter. But what he lacks in technique, he more than makes up for his brute strength and explosiveness.

Mir and Lesnar have already duked it out before. In Lesnar’s second UFC fight, he aggressively sought out Mir. With both fighters on the ground and with Lesnar on top pounding away, it seemed as if Lesnar was going to win, with a barrage of blows against Mir. But Mir kept his composure, which paid off, as he capitalized on an opening for a knee bar to submit his opponent. It is no certainty that this will happen again. Lesnar has fought two fights after that (one was against Hall of Famer Randy Couture, to win the championship belt), and has surely learned something from that experience. Calling this match is like calling a toin coss - you just never know what will turn out, depending on various factors. Here are some points to look out for for each fighter.

Frank Mir has the ground game down to pat. If Lesnar tries to run over him like he did the first game, he must keep his head and look for an opportunity to submit. The question is: will Lesnar commit the same mistake twice? Given that experience, Lesnar may avoid the ground, which means that Mir will his hand speed and his kicks. He cannot use his vaunted left hand and try to knock Lesnar out. Engaging Lesnar in a slugfest will be foolhardy, because one punch is all it takes for Lesnar to win.  Mir’s hands need not be completely useless, though. He can still use his hands to keep Brock at bay for defensive purposes, or to set up takedown moves or kicks. His kicks will be his most potent weapon when the fight does not go to the floor. He can target the shin, to slow Lesnar down. If he feels adventurous, he can try a head kick, although that comes with huge risks.

As for Brock Lesnar there really is not much to say. His punches are a force to be reckoned with. One blow from him can finish the fight. But he will take down Mir if the situation calls for it. He was successful in the past with his ground and pound technique. But he must not get too excited when he is on top pounding away. He must not give any openings. He is not totally ignorant of basic MMA techniques - he has wrestling background in college, after all. But when fighting a mater technician like Mir, Lesnar has to keep all bases covered.
